In 1977 he became a foreign member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in Rome.

His research dealt with the Middle Ages ( Medieval Studies ), in particular its economic and social structure. Its socio-historical approach assumes that people act within social structures that shape their actions at least, often even set. He was interested in long-term developments, in which he embedding individual historical events and people. His approach thus differs from the approach of historicism, as it was customary before him, the ' men make history ' with the subject can be identified.
