Georges Hugnet

Georges Hugnet ( born July 11, 1906 in Paris, † June 26, 1974 in Saint -Martin de Ré ) was a French poet, novelist, playwright, illustrator and filmmaker.

Life

Georges Hugnet spent most of his childhood in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 1913 he returned to Paris. 1920 was the decisive year of his career. By Marcel Jouhandeau, who lived in the same building in Paris on Boulevard de Grenelle, his first poems Max Jacob were presented. Jacob became his mentor, and through him, he also got the contacts and access to the Paris art scene. During this time, Hugnet became friends with a number of influential artists of the early 20th century, such as Joan Miró, Marcel Duchamp, Pablo Picasso, Tristan Tzara, Man Ray and Jean Cocteau.

Hugnet was born in 1926 into contact with the surrealists, took part in many of their activities in part, wrote poetry, created collages, wrote books and book covers designed for surrealist publications, in collaboration with his friend Joan Miró. In 1929 the presentation of his film La Perle in the studio Ursulines in Paris. In the 1930s Hugnet was a member of the surrealist movement. André Breton was interested after reading Hugnets article Spirit of Dada in Painting for him; Tristan Tzara introduced them to each other. 1936 Hugnet was he was beteiligt.1939 in organizing the International Surrealist Exhibition in the New Burlington Galleries in London expelled from the movement because he would not give up his friendship with the poet Paul Éluard disgraced.

In 1940 Hugnet married his first wife, Germaine Pied; this marriage lasted for ten years and had no children. 1950 married Hugnet the seventeen year old Myrtille Hubert. The following year his son Nicolas Hugnet was born.

With the support of his father - a French furniture manufacturer - founded Hugnet a publisher, Les Editions de la Montagne to publish his works and those of his friends, including Tristan Tzara, Pierre de Massot and Gertrude Stein.

Hugnet wrote and translated numerous screenplays and created book illustrations until his death in 1974.
