Georges Tainturier

Georges Charles Armand Tainturier ( born May 20, 1890 in La Côte -Saint -André, † December 7, 1943 in Cologne) was a French fencer and double Olympic champion.

At the Summer Olympics in Paris in 1924 Georges Tainturier won the gold medal in the épée team. He repeated at the Olympic Summer Games 1932 in Los Angeles this success. He also won the International Fencing Championships in Ostend in 1926 epee individual.

After the invasion of the German army in France Tainturier engaged in the Resistance movement against the occupying forces. As a member of the " Groupe de Compiègne " he was arrested in the small French town on March 7, 1942, other members of the Resistance of the German military police. In the context of arrests after the Night and Fog Decree of 7 December 1941, coming in September 1942 to their deportation to Germany, first in the prison in Saarbrücken. Tainturier was sentenced on October 19, 1943 before the 2nd Division of the People's Court to death - whether in his presence, is not known. His execution was carried out together with seven companions on December 7, 1943 in Cologne.

In memory of Tainturier a fencing club was named after him in Compiègne.
