Georgi Todorov (weightlifter)

Georgi Todorov ( Bulgarian Георги Тодоров, English transcription Georgi Todorov, . Born December 4, 1952) is a former Bulgarian weightlifter. He won at the Olympic Games 1976, a silver medal and was World Champion in 1974 and 1975, respectively featherweight.

Career

The origin of Georgi Todorov, whose birthday was said to be according to another source already on December 4, 1951, not known. He started in any case for 1970 with the weightlifting and developed under the incumbent since 1969 Bulgarian coach Ivan Abadschiew within a few years to become a world-class man. With its low height of 1.54 meters and the favorable lever ratios associated he was predestined for the weightlifting bantamweight or featherweight.

At the international weightlifting stage he first appeared in 1971, when he at the Danube Cup tournament in Vienna Junior Featherweight with 337.5 kg in the Olympic triathlon before the Romanians Kovacsi, 330 kg and won.

In 1972, he appeared as early as at the European Championship in Constanta. He started there in the bantamweight and achieved in the Olympic triathlon 355 kg ( 115-102,5-137,5 ), with whom he finished second behind Rafael Belenkow from the USSR, who scored 360 kg. Also at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, he started bantamweight, where he obtained 350 kg ( 110-100-140 ), but only enough for eighth place, because there the performance of the lifters were significantly better than the European Championships in Constanta.

In 1973, the pressing of the Olympic three- fight was abolished. The competitions consist only of a duel, consisting of the tear and bumping since that time. What initially looked like a disadvantage for Todorov, the very strong, but showed relatively poor performance in the press in the snatch, changed very soon, because he scored straight in the snatch very soon excellence and made 1975 in this discipline with 128 kg and 130 kg even new world records.

In 1973 he started still bantamweight. At the European Championships in Madrid, he came up with 252.5 kg ( 115 to 147.5 ) in a duel behind compatriot Atanas Kirov, who came to 255 kg on the second place. He occupied the same space at the World Cup 1973 in Havana, where he rose to 255 kg ( 112.5 to 142.5 ), but was beaten back by Atanas Kirov with 257.5 kg scarce.

Georgi Todorov 1974 moved into the featherweight. This change made immediately paid off, because he was in Verona in this weight class with 272.5 kg ( 120 to 152.5 ) European champion before Dito Schanidse from the USSR, who also scored 272.5 kg, but was a little heavier than he. At the World Championship 1974 in Manila Georgi Todorov increased to the new world record weight of 280 kg ( 125-155 ) in a duel and won with it before Nikolai Kolesnikov from the USSR, which reached 277.5 kg. In both championships, he referred the Olympic champion from 1972 featherweight, his compatriot Norair Nurikjan, to 3rd place.

1975 was the World and European Championships held in Moscow. Todorov reached there in the spring Weight 285 kg ( 125-160 ) and thus won uncontested before Kolesnikov, who came again to 277.5 kg. At the European Championships 1976 in Berlin (East) he was not in such a good shape. Although he scored with 277.5 kg ( 125 to 162.5 ) vies still a world-class result, but this was enough only for third place behind Kolesnikov, 282.5 kilograms and his compatriot Todor Todorov, 280 kg. At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, he scored in a duel 280 kg ( 122.5 to 157.5 ), winning behind Kolesnikov, 285 kg ( 125-160 ), the silver medal.

1977 had to work off on the orders of Ivan Abadschiew at the World and European Championships in Stuttgart in the bantamweight Georgi Todorov from team tactical reasons. With great tortures he managed this well and still scored with 247.5 kg ( 110 to 137.5 ) such a good performance, so that he in the championship standings behind the Japanese Jiro Hosotani, 252.5 kg ( 107.5 to 145 ), to second place in the European championship and even won the first place.

Georgi Todorov 1978 lacked in international championships. He started in 1979 at the Fifth National Spartakiade in Sofia and took there featherweight with 272.5 kg in second place behind Manolow who came to 280 kg. But he was preferred to Manolow both at the European Championships this year in Varna, as well as at the World Cup 1978 in Thessaloniki. In Varna, he finished in the spring with weight 272.5 kg ( 125 to 147.5 ) behind Kolesnikov, who, however, with 292.5 kg ( 127.5 to 165 ) outclassed him literally, second place and also in Salonika was Georgi Todorov Second behind Poland's Marek Seweryn, 282.5 kg. Kolesnikov had there three failed attempts at thrusting.

Strangely enough, ended Georgi Todorov after those events, one year before the Olympic Games in Moscow, his career. About his future is not known.
