The lari (Georgian ლარი, ISO Code: GEL) is the currency of Georgia. He was supported by the National Bank of Georgia ( NBG ) circulated on 25 December 1995. 1 lari = 100 tetri.

The word means both Lari treasure as well as property in Georgian. Tetri is an old Georgian word for silver coins from the 13th century.

Banknotes are in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 lari in circulation. They show pictures of Niko Pirosmani (1 Lari), Zachary Paliashvili (2 Lari), Ivane Javakhishvili (5 Lari), Akaki Tsereteli (10 lari ), Ilia Chavchavadze (20 lari ), Queen Tamara (50 lari ), Shota Rustaveli (100 Lari), Kakuza Tscholoqaschwili (200 lari ), David the builder (500 lari ).

Coins are in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 Tetri and, since 2006, 1 and 2 lari.

All Georgian banknotes bear on the front of the Georgian Bordschgali, a sun symbol with seven wings, on the back of the English lettering Georgia. In the years 1999 and 2000, the National Bank has issued modified bills with new security markings.

The Lari is freely convertible. He replaced the Georgian currency coupon (Georgian Kuponi ), a Token, which was used in parallel with the Russian ruble and Western currencies between 1993 and 1995.
