Georgian National Academy of Sciences

The Georgian Academy of Sciences (Georgian საქართველოს მეცნიერებათა აკადემია / Sakartwelos Meznierebata Akademia ) brings together 63 research institutions in Georgia, the basic research drive. It coordinates the research in Georgia and maintains links with other countries. Your seat is Tbilisi.

Members

The Academy belong to 69 members, 70 corresponding members and 73 foreign. President Tamas Gamqrelidse. The Academy is divided into the departments of mathematics and physics, earth sciences, applied mechanics, mechanical engineering and control processes, chemistry and chemical technology, biology, physiology and experimental medicine, scientific problems of agriculture, social science, language and literature. It includes the Botanical Garden and the Botanical Gardens Tbilisi Batumi.

History

The Georgian Academy of Sciences was founded in 1941. Forerunners were the Georgian branch of the Soviet Academy of Sciences and was founded in the twenties and thirties, research bodies in the Tbilisi State University. The spire of the building is still graced by a Soviet star.

Its first president was the mathematician and physicist Nikoloz Muschelischwili. He presided over the Academy until 1972. Followed him the mathematician Ilia Wekua ( 1972-1977 ), Evgeni Charadse ( 1977-1986 ) and Albert Tawchelidse ( 1986-2005 ). Since February 2005 the linguist and orientalist Tamas Gamqrelidse is President of the Academy.

The Academy is a member of the European Federation of National Academies of Natural Sciences and the Humanities. It publishes the scientific journal Bulletin of the Georgian Academy of Sciences.

In addition to the Georgian Academy of Sciences there is the Georgian Academy of Agricultural Science, the Georgian Academy of Biomedical Sciences and the Abkhazian Regional Academy of Sciences. They, too, have their headquarters in Tbilisi.
