Georgios Mavros

Georgios Mavros (Greek Γεώργιος Μαύρος; born March 15, 1909 in Kastelorizo ​​; † 6 May 1995 Athens ) was a Greek lawyer and politician.

Life and Politics

Georgios Mavros studied law in Athens and Berlin. He received his doctorate in Athens and in 1932 was a lawyer. Since 1937 he was also an assistant professor of international law at the University of Athens.

His political career began after the Second World War. In 1945 he became Secretary to the Prime Minister, 1946, he became Minister of Justice. In the same year he was elected for the Liberal Party in Parliament. In various cabinets he was Minister of Economics (1949-1950), Minister of Finance (1951 ) and Defense ( 1952). As a close associate of George Papandreou he took over the government as the coordinating minister 1963/1964 responsibility for the economic and financial policy. From 1949 to 1952 represented Mavros Greece as a member of the Board of Governors of the World Bank in Washington and from 1964 to 1966 he was governor of the National Bank of Greece.

After the coup of the colonels in April 1967 Mavros from April to October 1968 was placed under house arrest. As a political legacy of the late George Papandreou in 1968, he was one of the main opponents of the military rule.

After the Turkish invasion of Cyprus led to the collapse of the military junta, was Mavros in July 1974 Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister in the government of national unity by Konstantinos Karamanlis. In this capacity he negotiated in Geneva with his Turkish counterpart on the political status of Cyprus. The negotiations broke down in August 1974.

Mavros led the center - Union Enosis Kendrou under the name Center Union / New forces in the first elections after the military rule on November 17, 1974. Besides the dominant political personality of Konstantinos Karamanlis ( New Democracy ) and the increasingly center-left endearing, charismatic personality of Andreas Papandreou remained his successes but fails. In the parliamentary elections in 1974 his party won 20.42 %, in the elections in 1977, it achieved under the name Union of the Democratic Centre ( EDIK ) or 11.95%.
