Georgium

The Georgium is next to the park Woerlitzer the most important historical landscape park in Dessau- Wörlitz in English style. He was of Prince Johann Georg, the younger brother of Prince Leopold III. Created Friedrich Franz of Anhalt- Dessau and named after him. Today he is in the Dessau- Roßlauer district Ziebigk.

History

From 1780 the Prince Johann Georg was north of the former town of Dessau, build a small neoclassical country house in a Auenbruchwald by Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff. The surroundings of the building was a garden in the English style, similar to the Woerlitzer Park, converted. She also received numerous classical and romanticized park buildings, sculptures, small architecture and monuments that have been harmoniously integrated into the landscape and nature.

The most important are the so-called strangers house, the Roman Ruin, an ionic circular temple and two replicas of ancient arches and the statue of Prince Franz in ancient clothes. The George on the actual garden ( 21.3 ha) followed Beckerbruch (97 ha) was left as floodplains and marshland close to nature, but also embellished with small buildings and monuments. The elaborate landscape park goes here harmoniously into the natural landscape. Elbpavillon and Wallwitzburg (artificial ruin) allow a wide view over the garden landscape along the Elbe. Anhalt Art Gallery

The Georgium castle houses the Anhalt Art Gallery, can be seen in the old German and Dutch paintings. Furthermore, early original artwork of Albrecht Dürer and Lucas Cranach the Elder to admire. Among other things, Dürer's most famous work Melancolia.

The works of the Gemäldegalerie had been relocated during World War II in the potash mine Solvayhall at Bernburg. Some works of art were stolen by U.S. soldiers and later appeared on the American art market. In July 1945, the trophy Commission of the Red Army seized the entire existing stock and transported him in April 1946 in the Soviet Union: 800 paintings and 17,000 graphic works. 1958/59 returned 600 paintings, 1,000 drawings and 10,000 prints.
