Georgius Merula

Giorgio Merula, Latin Georgius Merula (* 1430 in Alessandria, † 1494 in Milan ) was an Italian humanist.

Life

Merula studied with Francesco Filelfo in Milan, then worked as a private tutor in Milan and taught Greek and rhetoric in Mantua and Venice ( 1465-1482 ). Ludovico Sforza invited him in 1483 to return to Milan a. There he began searching for historical documents to write a history of the Sforza family. This led to his secretary in 1493 to the discovery of important classical manuscripts in Greek and Latin language at the Abbey Bobbio. Merula published editions of Marcus Tullius Cicero, Marcus Porcius Cato the Elder and Plautus with comments.
