Georgy Skhirtladze

Giorgi Sergeyevich Schirtladse, georgian გიორგი სხირტლაძე, ( born November 9, 1932 in Mtiskalta, Samegrelo and Upper Svaneti, † March 25, 2008 in Tbilisi ) was a Soviet wrestler from Georgia.

Life

He came early in the sports club Spartak Tbilisi, where she started the struggle. In Tbilisi, a wrestler center had developed after 1945, the approach formed a large number of excellent wrestler. Schirtladse who wrestled free style, was one of them.

At the international wrestling mat the first time he made in an international struggle of the Soviet Union against Sweden in 1954 in Stockholm attention to itself, where he middleweight Bengt Lindblad and Axel Grönberg, the Olympic champion in 1948 and 1952, defeated the two Swedish top wrestler. In the Soviet Championships in 1956 in free style Schirtladse occupied while behind the Estonians Saar only the second place, but was nominated for the Olympic Games in Melbourne anyway. There he fought in the middleweight division in free style bronze medal.

At the World Championships 1957 in Istanbul Schirtladse became vice world champion. After a victory over Hasan Güngör from Turkey he wrestled against Prodan Gardschew from Bulgaria undecided, but then lost surprisingly to Nabi Sorouri from Iran and so playful the world title.

1959 occupied Schirtladse at the Second Peoples of the USSR Spartakiade middleweight behind Dschachsarow T. and N. Aksenow only the 3rd place, but got back the confidence of the Soviet sports officials in the nomination for the World Cup this year in Tehran. In Tehran, he justified this confidence, because he became world champion, although he lost again against Nabi Sorouri.

In 1960 Schirtladse was a Soviet champion before Gobedischwili G. and A. Agabebian and represented the Soviet Union again at the Olympics. In Rome, he was defeated by the American Edward De Witt and thus did not reach the final battle against Hasan Güngör, but nevertheless won the silver medal.

After 1960 Schirtladse was with no international Ringer championships more at the start.
