Geospatial metadata

The ISO 19115 " Geographic Information - Metadata " is a standard of the International Organization for Standardization ( ISO). It is part of the ISO 191xx series on standardization of geographic information and spatial data. It is since May 2005 as German DIN EN ISO 19115.

The ISO 19115 defines an internationally accepted standard for describing geographic information and related services. With this standard, it should be possible to describe spatial data using metadata so that so that their suitability for certain applications evaluated, or even meaningful presentation and processing methods can be derived. The scheme of ISO 19115 includes, inter alia, Information about the content, spatial and temporal references, data quality, data accessibility or usage rights.

While the overall model over 400 different metadata elements defined, includes the mandatory core data set that meets the minimum requirements for the description of spatial data, only about 20 elements. The standard is an important basis in the development of spatial data infrastructures (SDI ).
