Ger van Elk

Ger van Elk ( b. 1941 in Amsterdam ), lives in Middelburg (Netherlands) is a Dutch conceptual artist, painter, photographer and sculptor. He belongs together with Jan and Marinus Dibbet Boezem to the representatives of Arte Povera in the Netherlands.

Life and work

Ger van Elk studied from 1959 to 1961 at the Instituut voor Kunstnijverheidsonderwijs in Amsterdam, 1961-1963 Art History at Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles from 1965 to 1966 at the University of Groningen.

In the years 1961 and 1962 he co-founded the artist group adynamic Groep ( " adynamic Group"), together with Wim T. Schippers and Bob Wesdorp. In 1967 he was co-founder of the Internationaal Instituut voor de Herscholing van Kunstenaars ( school to training future artists) with Jan Dibbet and Reinier Lucassen. From 1972 to 1981 he taught at the Ateliers '63 in Haarlem. From 1994 to 1995 he was a guest lecturer at the École des Beaux -Arts in Paris.

Ger van Elk was a participant in Documenta 5 in Kassel in 1972 in the Department of Individual mythologies represent film and at the Documenta 6 (1977 ) in the Department of Photography and the Documenta 7 in 1982 as an artist.

It was in 1982 with the David Roell Price, 1996 with the JC van Lanschotpreis for the sculpture and in 2004 awarded the oeuvre prize for the visual arts.

Ger van Elk is as conceptually working artist painting on the head and breaks the artistic traditions. All his work is distinguished by the fact that he consistently advocates for contemplation, concentration, tranquility and intimacy.

In the 1970s he created series of photographs, such as "The symmetry of diplomacy " (1972 to 1973 where he all people in photo: diplomats - represented itself) or " The missing persons" ( 1975/1976 ). The photo series were reworked and picturesque from him.
