Gerach

Gerach is a community in the Upper Franconian district of Bamberg and a member of the administrative community demand for construction. It is located in the Natural Park Haßberge about 20 km north of Bamberg and about 10 km south of boars.

History

Gerach was first mentioned on March 10, 1396. The settlement is probably considerably older. In numerous sales and donations Gerach went over the following centuries through many hands and was at times the lords of Schaumburg and Rotenhan. In 1750, the place became the property of the Prince-Bishopric of Bamberg. As part of the Prince-Bishopric of Bamberg Gerach fell in the secularisation of 1803 to Bavaria. In boundary settlements there in 1810 left the Grand Duchy of Würzburg, with which it finally fell back to Bavaria in 1814.

Mayor

Mayor since May 1, 2008 Gerhard Ellner ( SPD), who won the runoff election with 69.9 % of the vote against challenger Gerhard Wölflein (CSU ). 2014 Ellner was confirmed in one rival candidates with 67.22 % of votes in office. Its predecessor was Gunther Stegner (CSU ).

Coat of arms

The town coat of arms recalls the noble family of Rotenhan, owner of the village from the 15th to the 18th century. At the same time the rooster is the symbol animal of Saint Vitus, which is dedicated to the local Catholic church.

Attractions

The late Romanesque Church of Saint Vitus is one of the oldest churches in Franconia and comes in part from the 12th century. A relief on the church door represents the martyr Vitus praying in a kettle of hot oil dar. At the front of the church there is a war memorial.

On a village tour historic half-timbered houses, stone crosses and field rock cellar can be seen in the sandstone hills. In the district Mauschendorf the listed restaurant stands to Jägersruh, one of the oldest in the county.
