Gerald Albright ( born August 30, 1957 in Los Angeles ) is an American saxophonist of the crossover and smooth jazz
Life and work
Albright grew up in South Central Los Angeles and received as a child piano lessons before switching to the saxophone. He attended Locke High School and then studied at the University of Redlands. During this time he became a studio musician and sideman sought; he played recordings with Patrice Rushen, Anita Baker, Ray Parker, Jr., Lola Folana, Olivia Newton -John and Maurice White and toured with Les McCann, Rodney Franklin, Jeff Lorber, Teena Marie, Marlene Shaw, Debra and Eloise Laws, Quincy Jones, Whitney Houston, Phil Collins and others.
He also appeared at jazz festivals and was with the Jazz Explosion Tous on the side of Will Downing, Jonathan Butler, Hugh Masekela, Chaka Khan, to hear Rachelle Ferrell and others.
In 1987, his first album Just Between Us at Atlantic Records, the other albums on this label and followed at GRP Records. His recent Peak Records 2004 album New Beginning was nominated for a Grammy. On his own productions, he can also be heard as a bass guitarist, keyboardist, flautist and backing vocalist.
