Gerald Klug

Gerald Rudolf Klug ( born November 13, 1968 in Graz) is an Austrian politician ( SPÖ) and union official. Since 2005 he is member of the Austrian Federal Council since 2008 Club Vice-Chairman of the Social Democratic parliamentary group and was from 2010 to 2013 chairman of the SPÖ Federal Group.

On March 5, 2013 it was announced that he was to follow as Federal Minister of Defence and Sports of the Republic of Austria Norbert Darabos. On March 11, 2013, was sworn in by Federal President Heinz Fischer, Federal Minister.

Education and work

Klug visited between 1975 and 1979 the primary school in Stainz and continued his education between 1979 and 1983 at the local elementary school, continued. He then moved in 1983 to the Higher Technical College in Graz -Gösting, but broke his schooling in 1984 and began an apprenticeship as a turner, where he graduated from the Vocational School 1984-1987. Between 1987 and 1988 he completed the military service.

After his apprenticeship he worked between 1987 and 1990 in his learned profession at Siemens SGP, traffic engineering. In addition, he formed in 1989 at the Otto- Möbes Academy in Graz further and completed between 1989 and 1990 the Social Academy of the Chamber of Workers and Employees in Mödling. He studied alongside his profession from 1992 law at the Karl- Franzens- University of Graz. In 2001 he graduated with the degree Mag. from.

Policies and functions

Klug is since 1990 member of the union PRO- GE and since 2005 Kammerrat of the Chamber of Labour of Styria. He appeared between 2000 and 2005 as board member of the Chamber of Labour of Styria and is a substitute member of the general meeting of the Federal Chamber of Labour of Labour. He also served from 2003 to 2005 member of the National Executive of the Labour Market Service Styria and is active as a substitute member of the General Assembly of the Health Insurance Styria since 2004. He also is involved since 2000 as a lay judge at the High Court of Graz and was from 2001 to 2011 a member of the Independent Finance Senate of the Financial Directorate Graz.

Since 25 October 2005 Klug represents the SPÖ and the province of Styria in the Bundesrat and took over on 27 October 2008, the function of the club chairman deputy of the Social Democratic parliamentary group ( club of the Social Democratic deputies to the National Council, Federal Council and the European Parliament). Since 30 November 2010 he has been Chairman of the Federal faction of the Social Democratic Party. Within the party, he acts as Member of the Federal Executive of the SPÖ.

On March 5, 2013 it was announced that Klug is the Federal Minister of Defence and Sport in the federal government Faymann I. He thus replaced from Norbert Darabos, the national director of the Social Democratic Party was to direct the election campaign of the party for parliamentary elections in Austria 2013.
