Gerald R. Allen

Gerald R. Allen ( b. 1942 in Los Angeles, California) is an American- Australian ichthyologist.

His passion for the underwater marine world began in the summer of 1963, when he spent a semester at the University of Hawaii. 1972 Allen wrote his doctoral thesis on the systematics and biology of the anemone fish. In 1974 he was curator at the Western Australian Museum in Perth. Allen undertook research trips to the Great Barrier Reef, the Red Sea to South Africa, the Maldives, New Guinea, Japan and Central America. In particular, he was concerned with groupers, wrasses, Cardinal perches, and gobies. He also studied the freshwater fishes of Australia and New Guinea.

Gerald Allen discovered and described hundreds of fish. He has written 33 books and about 400 scientific papers. He spent about 8,000 hours underwater. In 2003 he received from the Australian Society for Fish Biology the K. Radway Allen Award for his outstanding scientific achievements in the field.

1998 Allen retired. But he continues to publish scientific papers and is involved in the non-profit organization Conservation International, in particular for the conservation of biodiversity in the area of ​​Vogelkop Peninsula.

In addition to his work ichthyological Allen engaged in ornithology, is a mountaineer and marathon running.
