Gerani (Rethymno)

Gerani (Greek Γεράνι (n. sg. ) ) Is a village in the municipality of Nikiforos Fokas in the Municipality of Rethymno on the Greek Mediterranean island of Crete.

Location

Gerani is situated approximately 7 kilometers west of Rethymno. The village is situated on a north facing back in about 90 meters in height. East of the village held Vederi Gorge ( Φαράγγι Βεδέρων ), north along the coastal highway 90 The nearest town Atsipopoulo located about 3.5 kilometers to the east, the coastal settlement of Petre's about 3 miles to the west.

History

The rural community of Gerani ( Κοινότητα Γερανίου Kinotita Geraniou ) existed from 1932 until 1997. The coastal settlement of Petre was recognized in 1991. With the implementation of local government reform after the Kapodistrias program in 1997, it merged with 14 other rural communities for community Nikiforos Fokas ( Δήμος Νικηφόρου Φωκά ). This in turn was under the administrative reform of 2010 in the town of Rethymno, Gerani since then has the status of a village.

Attractions

The cave of Gerani is located near the national road Chania -Rethymno at the height of the bridge at the northeastern end of the village. It was accidentally discovered in 1969 during construction of the National Road; access created in the course of blasting works for road construction. While exploring the original cave entrance could be detected from the inside. He was sealed to the end of the late Neolithic period. The stratigraphy from the early Neolithic to the Late Neolithic II is received excellent. Oldest fossil finds are a flock of endemic Pleistocene deer Candiacervus ropalophorus and the Megaloceros cretensis. The cave consists of six rooms with a total area of 1200 square meters.
