Life

David was the son of the craftsman David from January Oudewater. 1483 David came to Bruges and entered in January of the following year as a student in the local painters' guild one. Upon entry into the guild David was considered a student of Hans Memling. In addition to his artistic career, he also acted in local politics in Bruges. 1488 named the Guild him as jury for the City Council. After David had this office 1495/96 and 1498/99 held. After the death of his master Hans Memling Gerard David became the official painter to the town of Bruges.

Shortly before the year 1500 married David in Bruges Cnoop Cornelia, a daughter of the head of the local goldsmiths. With her he had a daughter. Through this marriage, but also through his art, he became very wealthy over the years. This put him in a position in 1521 to borrow the Carmelite Monastery of Zion a larger amount.

1503 David was in Bruges member of the lay society Our Lady of the dry tree. In Antwerp he was in 1515 registered in the Liggeren the Guild of St. Luke as a master.

David's artistic work showed early own style, although allusions to Jan van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden and Hugo van der Goes, are quite recognizable. Stylistic similarities to David's style can be found again in the work of the master of the André Madonna.

At the age of almost 70 years, Gerard David died on August 13, 1523 in Bruges.

Of his altarpieces, the Baptism of Christ in the academy and the Descent from the Cross in the church of St -Basile to Bruges, a Madonna with female saints and angels in the museum at Rouen and a Christ on the cross in the Berlin Museum received.
