Gerhard I of Toul ( Gerard ) (* 935 in Cologne, † April 23 994 in Toul ) was 963-994 Bishop of Toul. He is venerated as a saint.

Life

He probably came from a noble family. At the time of Archbishop Brun he was educated at the cathedral school in Cologne. The legend has it that he - after his mother was killed by a lightning strike - entered the ecclesiastical state and was noticed by his asceticism and its strict lifestyle. In the year 963 he was appointed by Otto I, Bishop of Toul.

He was the Ottonian closely linked. In the year 965 he met Otto I in Cologne. This confirmed the diocese of Toul possession of various abbeys. In 972 he took part in a synod at Ingelheim. 973 Otto II he met in Bonn. In other high-ranking clerics as abbot of Cluny Maiolus, with whom he was friends, and Adalbert of Prague he met 983 in Pavia on the way to the Reichstag in Verona Otto II and his wife Theophano. After the death of the Emperor, he was the brawler followers of the still immature Otto III in the struggle for the throne with Henry. In 984 he took part in Speyer on the court day the Regent Adelheid and Theophano. There were in the name of Otto III. issued by the imperial chancery documents in which the diocese of Toul possession of the monasteries Moyenmoutier and Saint Dié was confirmed.

He took not a significant political role of age. His main concerns were religious and peaceful nature. He promoted the welfare of the poor and the sick. In particular, his work in an epidemic in 981 has been praised. He traveled throughout his diocese and took care of the education of the clergy. He also emerged as a preacher. He was involved in the founding of the congregation of Saint- Gengoult de Toul and the construction of the cathedral in Toul. However, his influence was limited by the encroachments of the French king. He also had to force action against regional nobles. Not he could prevent Duke Frederick of Lorraine established himself at the Castle Bar.

Widrich of Toul has written a Vita over the bishop. In 1050 he was canonized by Leo X..

In the cathedral, it is still present diverse. A tomb dating from the 19th century in the crossing also reminds of him as a native of his time bishopric and his image on a church window.
