Gerard van Groesbeeck

Gerard van Groesbeeck (* 1517 in the castle Curingen in Hasselt, † December 23, 1580 ) was a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Groesbeeck was bishop of Liege. He was known to combat the emerging Protestantism extremely hard. So he left, inter alia, the uprisings in Hasselt, Maaseik and Maastricht in 1567 reflected. Pope Gregory XIII. appointed him on February 21, 1578 cardinal.
