Gerard Zerbolt of Zutphen

Gerard van Zutphen Zerbold (* 1367 in Zutphen, † December 4, 1398 in the monastery of Windesheim near Zwolle ) was a Dutch late medieval theologian, writer and one of the protagonists of the spiritual movement Modern Devotion.

After theological and canonical studies, he entered 1384 into the Frater House of the Brotherhood of the Common Life in Deventer. Here, he was librarian, writer and confessor in the Frater House. On December 4, 1398, he died as Einunddreißigjähriger in the monastery of Windesheim canons at Zwolle, according to the tradition of the plague. The after-effect of his work is judged differently. Some writers see him as a forerunner of the Reformation movement, while others recognize one of the spiritual sources of the Society of Jesus in him.
