Gerardo Guevara

Luis Gerardo Guevara Viteri ( born September 23, 1930 in Quito ) is an Ecuadorian composer.

Life

Guevara studied at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música in Quito and won in a composition contest for its fifty years of existence in 1950 the first prize in the piano piece Inspiración. He then went to Guayaquil, where he played as a pianist in the Orquesta Blacio Jr. and worked as assistant to the choir director of the Conservatorio Antonio Neumane. In 1958 his ballet Yaguar Shungo for symphony orchestra, choir and soloists.

A grant from the UNESCO enabled him to study with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. In 1967 he was orchestra conductor to he École Normale de Musique. At the Sorbonne he studied with Jacques Chilly and received in 1968 a diploma as a musicologist.

Since 1971, he conducted the Symphony Orchestra of Ecuador Nacional, in the following year he founded the choir of the Universidad Central del Ecuador, whose conductor he was. In 1973, he became president of the newly founded Sociedad de Autores y Compositores Ecuatorianos ( Sayce ). In 1980 he was appointed director of the Conservatorio Nacional de Música; He held the position until 1988. Since 1993 he worked at the Centro Integral de Música.
