The Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography, often abbreviated as WGIK (Russian Всероссийский государственный институт кинематографии имени С.А.Герасимова, ВГИК ) is a state film school in Moscow.

History

The Institute of Cinematography was founded in 1919 by Vladimir Gardin, making it the oldest film school world.

From 1934 to 1991 the Institute was named " All-Union State Institute of Cinematography " (Russian Всесоюзный государственный институт кинематографии ). 1986, it was named additionally after Russian director Sergei Gerasimov and actor.
