Gerberga, wife of Carloman I

Gerperga (often Gerberga ) was the wife of the Carolingian Charles Mann I, the brother and Mitkönigs of Charlemagne.

After her husband died in 771 and Charles is the part of the empire had acquired under disregard of the sons of Carloman, Gerperga fled with her children to the Lombard king Desiderius. Then she disappears from the tradition.

Name confusion with the wife of Charles

In several sources Gerperga is erroneously referred to as the daughter of Desiderius, probably in confusion with the then-wife of Charlemagne, a Langobardenprinzessin.

The historian Janet Nelson then put forward the thesis that Charles's wife, whose name remains anonymous in the sources and is usually called by historians Desiderata, also Gerperga have been called, which would explain the confusion stated.
