Gerd Bonk

Gerd Bonk ( born August 26, 1951 in Limbach (Vogtland ) is a former German weightlifter.

Career

The Vogtländer Gerd Bonk began at BSG Motor Nema Netzschkau as athlete and put 1967 in the shot put with 17.82 meters a GDR youth record. In addition to the shot put, he ran in developing the necessary force and the weight lifting. When he participated in competitions in weightlifting and the successes were larger herein as in the shot put, he decided in 1969 all for weight lifting, which he now operational at SC Karl- Marx-Stadt. His coach was Klaus Kroll, a former topping lift the GDR. In 1971 he became the first East German champion in the super heavyweight division (at that time more than 110 kg of body weight). However, his international debut in the same year at the Baltic Cup in Lübeck went wrong, because he had three failed attempts in the Press. Nevertheless, in a very short time he managed to jump in the absolute world elite, which he then belonged until 1980. It him but never managed to beat Vasily Alexeyev of the USSR or Rudolf Mang from the Federal Republic of Germany. His special discipline was thrusting in which he set two world records. In 1980, he was still one third place at the European Championships and picked at a smaller event again 430 kg ( 180-250 ) in a duel, but was not nominated for the Olympic Games in Moscow.

Gerd Bonk stepped back then. The former weightlifter moved back to his home town of Limbach / Vogtland. He is now early retired and is considered one of the most famous victims of doping in the GDR competitive sports.

He was " special fighter," awarded the Georg von Opel Award for silence winner in the category in 2002.

International success in the all around

  • European gold medals: in 1974, 235 kg in 1975 with 242.5 kg in 1976 with 252.5 kg, respectively in pushing

  • EM bronze medals: in 1976 with 180 kg in the snatch, 215 kg in 1971, 1978 and 230 kg respectively in pushing

GDR Championships

Gerd Bonk was 1971, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977 and 1979 East German champion in the all around and won in the individual disciplines pressures (up to 1972), cracking and pushing another 15 DDR title.
