Gerd Gies

Gerd Gies ( born May 24, 1943 in Stendal ) is a German politician ( CDU) and was the first Prime Minister of Saxony- Anhalt after its formation in 1990.

Life

Gies holds a degree in veterinary medicine and worked for his doctorate in 1973 as a veterinarian in the northern district of Magdeburg. In 1970 he became a member of the CDU in the GDR. In the late 1980s he was chairman of the CDU in the district of Stendal. Until the turn time into it, he sat down for the " peace policy of the GDR " and used for the Christian Peace Conference.

In February 1990, the National Association of Saxony- Anhalt, the CDU was founded. It was the first state association in the former GDR. Gerd Gies became the first state chairman of the CDU Saxony- Anhalt.

In the first free election to the People's Chamber Gerd Gies was chosen for the CDU. Although he was the top candidate for the state election in Saxony -Anhalt in 1990, he was first victim of its own success. The CDU had won all but one of the constituencies. No candidate of the country came to the course list. Through the mandate waiver by the stasi loaded Armin Kleinau however Gies moved according to the state parliament of Saxony -Anhalt already the constituent meeting.

From October 28 1990 to 4 July 1991, Gies Prime Minister of Saxony- Anhalt as well as state chairman of the CDU Saxony- Anhalt. On 4 July 1991 Gies resigned after he had been accused, he had urged MPs with Stasi allegations to give up her seat in Parliament. Gies was a member of the Landtag of Saxony -Anhalt 1990-1998. , Even after the resignation as Prime Minister Gies remained at first regional chairman. End of November 1991 Werner Münch was elected as the new state chairman.

Then he worked in the energy industry and was until 2003 the board of Electrabel Germany AG. There he was CEO of the distribution company energy SaarLorLux AG ( 2000-2002).

In 2009, he is the representative of the above, today firmierende as GDF Suez Energy Germany AG company of the German Association of New Energy Suppliers whose Vice Chairman he is.
