Gerhard A. Ritter

Gerhard Albert Ritter ( born March 29, 1929 in Berlin ) is a German historian.

Life

Knight grew up in Berlin and studied from 1947 at the University of Tübingen and the Free University ( FU) Berlin history, political science, philosophy and German .. With a thesis on the labor movement in Wilhelmine Empire, he became the Dr. phil at Hans Herzfeld 1952. doctorate. From 1952 to 1954 he was a research stay at St Antony's College, Oxford University, then an assistant at Herzfeld at the FU Berlin. There he completed his habilitation in 1961 with a record of the Social Democratic Party and the Free Trade Unions between 1890-1900 at the same time for modern history and political science.

In 1962, Ritter a chair of political science at the Otto Suhr Institute of the Free University of Berlin. In 1965 he accepted an appointment to the chair of Modern History in Münster. In 1974 he became Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at the Ludwig- Maximilians- University of Munich, where he became Professor Emeritus in 1994. He was a visiting professor at Oxford ( 1965/66 and 1972 ), Berkeley (1971 /72) and Tel Aviv ( 1973) holds.

Research focus of knights are the German social history in the 19th and 20th centuries, and English history. He has published numerous works.

From 1976 to 1980, Ritter President of the Association of Historians of Germany. In 1991 and 1992 he was the initiator of the reconstruction of the History Department at the Humboldt University in Berlin. Knights from 1980 to 2001 it became, since a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and since 1971 a member of the Historical Commission of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences.

Ritter belonged from 1985 to 2009 the Advisory Board of the Historical Journal. He is not related to the Freiburg historian Gerhard Ritter ( 1888-1967 ).
