Gerhard Casper

Gerhard Casper ( born December 25, 1937 in Hamburg ) is a German constitutional lawyer and law professor. Casper from 1992 to 2000, President of Stanford University.

Life

Gerhard Casper studied law at the Albert- Ludwigs- University of Freiburg, Yale University and University of Hamburg. In 1964 he received his doctorate with the work of the Legal Realism and Political Theory in the American legal thought at the University of Freiburg.

From 1964 he taught in the United States, first as an assistant professor of political science at the University of California, Berkeley, then as a professor of law and political science at the University of Chicago, where he served as Provost ( Chancellor ) between 1987 and 1992. From 1992 to 2000 he was President of Stanford University, where he again taught law since 2001.

He has received several honorary doctorates, including one from Yale University. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Casper's research interests lie in the area of constitutional law. In addition, he stepped out in the education and higher education policy debate in Germany and the USA as observers and actors.
