Gerhard Cyliax

Gerhard " Gerd" Cyliax ( born August 23, 1934 in Dortmund, † 17 May 2008) was a German football player.

About the person

Cyliax began playing football at TBV Mengede. In 1955 he moved to Westfalia Herne, where he played until 1957. From 1958-1959 he was in Preußen Münster under contract. For Westfalia Herne and Preußen Münster he had completed 66 games with 18 goals in the Oberliga West. He then played in the years 1959-1968 at Borussia Dortmund. He was awarded the 1963 German champions Borussia Dortmund and 1965 DFB Cup winner. In 1966 he was part of the Borussia - Eleven, the first time won a European Cup for German football team in the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup at Hampden Park in Glasgow.

Gerd Cyliax played on the outside left, but could also be used as a right winger. Legendary was his strength and his running speed. He belonged to the extended 1956 Olympic squad, as he was able to run 100 meters in less than eleven seconds. He was able to play out over the outer rail at high speed scoring chances. During the first Bundesliga season 1963/64, he switched to the right-back position.

Cyliax came at Borussia 1959-1963 to 105 missions with 22 goals in the Oberliga West and 101 missions in six goals in the Bundesliga. From 1963 to 1968 eleven missions came in the European Cup with two goals added.

On March 27, 1957, he arrived in the German U -23 national team in the international game in Essen against Belgium as a left winger for use and contributed two goals in the 4-2 win the DFB - team. It was his only international use.

He was most recently earned among other older players, as only a few days later deceased Heinrich Kwiatkowski, the Council of Elders of Borussia Dortmund.

Cyliax died on 17 May 2008 of a stroke at the age of 73 years.
