Gerhard Ebeling

Life

From 1939 to 1945 he was pastor of the Confessing Church in Berlin. Since August 1945 - Helmut Thielicke on switching back - he was an assistant with Hanns Rückert and in 1947 he received his habilitation. On 7 October the same year Ebeling started his independent academic teaching with the inaugural lecture on " Church History and Canon Law " as a professor of Church history at the University of Tübingen. In 1954 he became professor of systematic theology, as the successor of appointed as rector of the University of Hamburg Helmut Thielicke, from 1956 he taught in Zurich in the chair of dogmatic theology, history of dogma and symbolism, from 1965 again in Tübingen in Tübingen. From 1968 to 1979 he was professor of fundamental theology and hermeneutics in Zurich.

Ebeling published the Critical editions of the works of Martin Luther ( Weimar edition ) and Friedrich Daniel Ernst Schleiermacher with others. He influenced the research on Luther and Christology. Its main facilities are located in the problem domain of hermeneutics and in Luther research. Christian theology he sees in the preaching mission of the church founded (as the clarification and deepening ), the center of theology should lie in preaching as "before God and of speech." He replied in a reflected manner on Bonhoeffer's question about a religion-less Christianity and developed in the tradition of Karl Barth and the distinction between faith and religion. Like Friedrich Gogarten Luther in his interpretation Ebeling sees in Luther's doctrine of law and gospel, the distinction between preaching the message of justification and human reality of life.
