Gerhard Oppitz

Gerhard Oppitz ( born February 5, 1953 in Frauenau / Bavaria ) is a German pianist.

Life

Oppitz visited the Heilbronner Robert -Mayer -Gymnasium and in 1970 state and national winners play music in the youth competition. Later he studied with Paul Buck, Hugo Steurer and Wilhelm Kempff. In the summer of 1977, at age 24, became the first German Oppitz the Arthur Rubinstein Piano Competition in Tel Aviv. In 1981 he was appointed so far the youngest professor in the history of the Institute at the Munich Academy of Music, where he taught until today.

As a soloist he has performed with many renowned conductors and orchestras. Oppitz considered as an accomplished interpreter of Brahms. All works of this composer, he has recorded on vinyl and presented in concert cycles. He also has the complete piano works of Schubert listed. On Plates are complete piano works by Grieg and the complete works for piano and orchestra by Weber.

Oppitz is also committed to contemporary composers such as Lutoslawski, Ligeti, Messiaen, Henze, Sauter and Boulez.

2009 Oppitz was awarded the Brahms Prize.
