Gerhard Rohlfs

Gerhard Rohlfs (* July 14, 1892 in Berlin light field, † 12 September 1986 in Tübingen ) was a German linguist and professor at the University of Tübingen and the Ludwig- Maximilians- University of Munich.

Life

Rohlfs studied from 1913 Romance studies at the Friedrich -Wilhelms -Universität zu Berlin and the University of Grenoble. He served on the Western Front (World War I ). With a PhD in Heinrich Morf he was in 1920, Dr. phil. doctorate. Moreover he state exam in French, Latin and Italian. After a six- month research stay in Calabria, he habilitated in 1922 Eduard Wechssler with an investigation into the Romanesque habeo - Futurum and conditionalis and was a tenured professor at the Friedrich -Wilhelms -Universität zu Berlin.

1926 Rohlfs was full professor in Tübingen, 1938, he accepted an appointment to the Chair of Romance Philology in Munich as successor of Karl Vossler zwangsemeritierten. 1942, a working committee of Romance was formed at the German Academy, Gerhard Rohlfs the directed and composed. From the beginning of his scientific career he devoted to a particular degree of exploration of the southern Italian Gräzität which for him was not a result of immigration to the Byzantine period, but went back to older roots in the Magna Graecia. In addition to the Italo- Greek dialects in Calabria and Salento he dealt with the historical grammar of the Italian language and its dialects. In addition, he has published studies on Spanish, Old French and Romansh. Basically, his lexicographical publications on the southern Italian dialects and to onomastics Calabria. As part of its overall Romanist field research he published pioneering studies on linguistic geography and dialectology, voice beside atlases and introductions to the study.

He was co-editor of the archive for the study of modern languages ​​and literatures (1930-1954) and editor of the series collection of Romanesque exercise texts.

Honors

The University of Pisa in 1964 awarded him the Premio Forte dei Marmi. On 18 December 2008 a secondary school was in Santa Severina (Province of Crotone), the Rohlfs has visited several times, named after him. Rohlfs ' students and friends dedicated to him seven Commemorative ( 1952 to 1986 ).
