Gerhard Steinkogler

Gerhard " Gerd" or " Copa " Steinkogler ( born September 29, 1959 in Graz, Styria ) is an Austrian former professional football player and national team.

Club career

Steinkogler started the football game at the junior Grazer AK. The attacker was able to early celebrate his first national success by 1976 with the U-20 won the Austrian Championship.

From the season 1977/78 he was already in the senior squad for use in the following season the youngster has already won, and in the autumn of 1979, many international organizations were aware of him. Thus Werder Bremen secured the rights to the player who GAK redeemed 5.5 million shillings from the sale, in those days a very large sum for a young Austrian players. As of December 1979 Steinkogler was for the Hanseatic League in use, but was injured soon so heavy that he during the season only 7 inserts ( 1 goal) came.

After the disappointing spring and the descent of Werder in the second division Steinkogler changed in the summer of 1980 back to Austria FK Austria Vienna, where he celebrated great successes. In his first season, 1981, he was Austrian champion and cup winner in the following year. In special memory be Flugkopfballtor in the first round of the European Cup Winners' Cup in Vienna against Panathinaikos Athens. In the quarter- final round he scored the decisive goal for advancement to the semifinals at the Nou Camp Stadium against FC Barcelona. Through this and other crucial goals in OFB Cup and international cup competitions Steinkogler was soon referred to as " Copa " (Spanish for the Cup competition).

In the summer of 1983 Steinkogler joined on loan for the first SSW Innsbruck to Tyrol to play again from October for his hometown club GAK. In 1984 he returned to Austria and was with the Viennese, Austrian Champion and again in the 1985/86 season even double winners.

In the summer of 1986, the Vienna undertook the attacker during the championship. For the oldest football club in Austria Steinkogler played until 1991 and was part of the team that was successful, among others, Mario Kempes end of the 80s.

In 1991, Steinkogler for second-rate Wiener Sport - Club, 1992 River Estates Subdivision and 1994 SV Gera village, where he came on his last appearances in the second division. In autumn 1995, Steinkogler played at unterklassigen WAF, in the spring at the SKVg Pottenbrunn. His career ended when he SV Großriedenthal in Lower Austria subclass.

In a total of 332 games in the Austrian Bundesliga, he scored 99 goals.

National team

Steinkogler had an impressive start in the OFB team. Three days before his 20th birthday, he scored the goal for 3-1 Final at home to Hungary on his debut. Partly due to its susceptibility to injury, he brought it but only five appearances for the national team.
