Gerhard Vollmer

Gerhard Vollmer ( born November 17, 1943 in Speyer ) is a German physicist and philosopher who was known in particular for his work on evolutionary epistemology.

Life

Vollmer studied mathematics, physics and chemistry in Munich, Berlin, Hamburg and Freiburg. After graduating in Physics ( 1968), he studied in Freiburg, further philosophy and linguistics.

In Freiburg he received his Ph.D. in 1971 in theoretical physics at Siegfried Flügge. He was subsequently employed as a research assistant with interruption by a one-year stay in Montreal until 1975. He received his Ph.D. in 1974 also in philosophy.

Vollmer taught from 1975 at the University of Hanover, from 1981 in the subject Biophilosophie at the University of Giessen and from 1991 to 2008 in Philosophy at the Technical University of Braunschweig. His research interests are logic, epistemology and philosophy of science, natural philosophy, artificial intelligence.

In 2004 he was awarded "for the foundation of an evolutionary epistemology and for his outstanding intermediary between the natural and social sciences ," the Cultural Award of the Eduard Rhein Foundation.

Vollmer is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Humanist Academy of Bavaria, the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina, Halle ( since 1998), the Giordano Bruno Foundation and the Brunswick Scientific Society. He is also Associate Editor of education and criticism and is part of the Science Council of the Society for the Scientific Investigation of para-science.
