Germa

Garama (Greek Γαράμη Garame ) is an ancient city in Libya. The ruins of Garama located in Southern Libya, in the Wadi al - Haya, about 40 kilometers east of Awbārī ( Ubari ) and 160 kilometers southwest of Sabha. It is regarded as the center of the lost Garamantenreiches and as namesake of this culture.

History

The oldest ruins suggest a settlement close since about 5000 BC. There three main development phases have been identified that extend to four feet below the horizon of the last medieval settlement.

In the 1st century BC, there were battles with the Romans, which penetrated under proconsul Lucius Cornelius Balbus Minor in the Sahara and Garama destroyed ( 20-19 BC). The destruction Garamas by the Romans, however now regarded as doubtful. It is expected that agreements have been reached between the rivals. In the first half of the 7th century AD, the last ruler of Garama was deposed during the Arab invasion.

The decline of the city is supplied pushed the disproportionate water consumption and the consequent lack of water.
