The author of the winning title will receive 25,000 euros, the other five finalists each get 2,500 euros.

Idea

The award achieved for the German speaking a senior literary prize, the Prix Goncourt or comparable to the Man Booker Prize. Unlike the German Book Prize and its successor, the Prize of the Leipzig Book Fair, in addition to the grand prize winner, five other novels are highlighted as finalists in a special way. According equipped is the doping.

The selection process takes place, accompanied by extensive media reports, over several months. Thus, an increased publicity is achieved for about 20 titles.

Selection

Publishers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland apply with a maximum of two songs from their production, which must be published in the period from October of the previous year to September of the award year. The German Book Prize Academy, the Culture and Media consist of nine to ten representatives of the book and media industry in addition to the Commissioner of the Federal Government, selects the annually changing jury. This consists of two writers, four journalists and a literary bookseller.

The jury will view all submissions and provides an around 20 titles longlist, which will be published in August of the award year. From this selection, the judges determine six finalists that they publish in September, the so-called short list. On the Monday before the Frankfurt Book Fair in October, the award-winning novel will be announced in the Imperial Hall at Frankfurt's Römer.

Criticism

In 2008, a debate about the meaning of the price and its modalities developed. Several writers have criticized an arbitrary choice for " extra-literary " criteria and the compulsory attendance of nominees. Was pointed to the need for a popularization of high demanding literature.

The journalist Wolfram Schütte spoke against it in accordance with Monika Maron price from to be a book prize. Rather, it were a marketing price, the " above all the bestseller addicted bookstore chains " profitable. In this case, you would lose the most unique quality of the German publishing industry from the point of view, since most of the world literature has been translated here.
