German Emigration Center

The German Emigration Center is a museum in Bremerhaven. Its main theme is the German emigration to the United States in different eras. It is located directly at the New Harbour opposite the Zoo am Meer. In a tour, visitors can follow the individual stations of emigration and query different databases for free. The building with a floor space of 4200 square meters was opened on 8 August 2005. The design for the museum comes from the Hamburg architectural firm Studio Andreas Heller.

Since 21 April 2012, the German Emigration Center has an additional, newly constructed building. In it also addresses immigration to Germany since the early 18th century. One focus it relies on the 1960s and 1970s, with mock shops, offices and even a cinema, themed films shows.

Awards

As far the only museum in Germany dedicated to the topic of migration. It was awarded on May 5, 2007 with the prize " European Museum of the Year". The European Museum Forum in particular praised the " emotional mediation of history through productions ". In order for the prestigious award after 15 years was the first time in a German museum.

Movies

The ARD brought 2004 in the Living History project wind force 8 a total of 37 persons on the traditional sailing ship Bremen as anno 1855 from Bremerhaven to New York.
