German federal election, 1871

The Reichstag elections of 1871 was the election of deputies to the first German Reichstag on March 3, 1871. Were eligible to vote 7.65 million male citizen of the Reich from 25 age, this amounted to approximately 19.4% of the population at that time. Military and other groups were excluded. The turnout was about 51 %.

The citizens of the later Empire Lands Alsace-Lorraine did not participate in the election and were thus not represented in the first parliament since the Peace of Frankfurt with the anti-war France was only in May, after the general election, closed.

The most powerful political movement in the Reichstag was the liberalism, the 202 of the 382 deputies were attributable. He was, however, splintered into different factions.

In particular, the National Liberals supported in the Reichstag, the policy of Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. One of the most important laws passed in this legislative session was the Lex Miquel Lasker with which the legislative competence of the empire was extended to the whole of bourgeois right.

Overall result

In the literature, partly differing seat numbers for the German Nazi Party, indicated for the center and for the Guelphs. The free- Conservative MP and Catholic canon Franz Künzer (Breslau 12) is attributed to the center in some publications. Likewise, the two deputies Guelph Lenthe (Hannover 9) and Fischer ( Hannover 12 ) are partly attributed to the center.

In each of the 382 constituencies, a deputy was elected by absolute majority vote. If no candidate in the first ballot won an absolute majority, a runoff between the top two candidates was performed. The following tables list the constituency winners and their party status be specified.
