German federal election, 1903

The general election in 1903 was the election of the 11th German Reichstag. It took place on 16 June 1903.

The turnout was about 76 %, it was significantly higher than in the general election in 1898.

Both the " cartel parties " as well as the center held stable. They had the government support to Chancellor Bernhard von Bülow substantially.

However, became clear again, the growth of the Social Democrats. In number of votes they had long been clearly the largest party, only a majority vote in force made them only the second strongest force in parliament. In "Red Saxony " they were able to win 22 of the 23 constituencies. Losses were mainly left-wing liberals and the smaller parties. The first time was successful with Wojciech Korfanty also a candidate of the Polish parties in an Upper Silesian constituency.

In the new Reichstag, the Social Democrats were opposed to stronger government policies. Under the First Moroccan Crisis and the general upgrades they criticized their opinion, failed German foreign policy. Inside the Social Democrats huddled together with the left-liberals to reform. An application for the abolition of the three-class suffrage in Prussia they could not get through though, but in 1906 they managed the introduction of diets for members of the Reichstag. Previously, especially Social Democrats, who often had no greater own wealth or own income stream, have been dependent on the support of the party coffers.

End of 1906, the Reichstag was dissolved prematurely and it came to the general election in 1907.
