History

Literary Institute " Johannes R. Becher "

In 1955 the Institute of Literature was founded with the goal of promoting the ideological and artistic education of the writer in Leipzig by a Secretariat decision of the Central Committee of the SED. The institute was awarded university status in 1958 and given the name Johannes R. Becher 1959. Teaching at the Institute continued the interests of young authors: Seminars for poetry, prose and drama were the focus of training. In addition, courses were offered, which should expand the intellectual horizons and stimulate literary creativity: German literature, world literature, Soviet literature, aesthetics, cultural studies, stylistics, literary criticism, art and music history as well as the obligatory at all GDR universities, technical Marxism -Leninism.

For the study also included annual internships in the VEB lignite plant Regis. Highlights of the semester were workshop readings before the plenary Institute, where students presented their texts waiving any additional commentary and criticism of public expose.

In addition to direct studies at the Institute of Literature, there was also the possibility of distance learning ( postgraduate studies ). Students of this study form met every four weeks to face courses at three weekend days.

Task of the institute was the education of writers to Socialist Realism in the sense of the SED. Nevertheless prevailed in protecting national institute an atmosphere of relative openness, which produced a considerable number of internationally recognized authors.

The central figure of the institute was about one and a half decades of the poet Georg Maurer, who until 1970 ran from 1955 poetry seminars and a whole generation of young East German poet coined ( Saxon school of poetry ).

In the summer of 1968 organized a group of students of the literary institute, including Heidemarie Härtl, Gert Neumann, Sigmar fist and Andreas Reimann, an illegal Poetry Reading at the Leipzig Elster reservoir. In this reading Wolfgang Hilbig was "discovered" as a talented poet. The Ministry for State Security evaluated the planned as a harmless poetic exchange event as subversive and buzz caused the de-registration, the expulsion from the party or the imprisonment of some students.

The Free State of Saxony solved the Institute of Literature, by decision of 31 December 1990 on the grounds, the study guide did not correspond to the requirements of a free society and a democratic rule of law and the social market economy. The lessons had been set to the ideology and the political and social order of real socialism. The recent graduates of the Literature Institute received a " Diploma of literary writing ." This may be regarded as a novelty.

Due to protests by the students (including occupation of the Institute from 1 to 6 January 1991), the resistances of MPs, scientists and numerous writers, among them Hans Mayer and Walter Jens, the Saxon State Ministry had to re- think about the Literary Institute. In the result, a concept was born, after dissolving the old and a new Institute was to set up.
