German Open (Badminton)

The German Open is a high-ranking badminton tournament, which will be held in Germany since 1955.

Initially there was the venue Bonn. Since 1963, changes the place where the German Open will be played. Organizer is the marketing company for badminton Germany mbH, a limited liability company whose capital is held as follows:

  • 50 % = German Badminton Association e.V.

History

The event started in 1955 under the name " International German Championships ". First time in 1981, a title sponsor was presented. There was a prize payout of $ 20,000 and the title of the tournament was officially changed to German Open. 1983, the prize money has been increased by 50% to 30,000 DM. In 1985, a change of currency to the U.S. dollar, combined with a further increase in the payout to 14,000 U.S. dollars, which at that time corresponded to about 45,000 DM. In order for the tournament belonged to the class of IBF Grand Prix tournaments. In 1986, a change of the title sponsor of the Carlton / Dunlop to Yonex, which was associated with a 50 % increase in the prize money to 22,000 U.S. dollars. Also in 1987 again saw a significant increase in the prize money to $ 35,000. After the tournament was to 1988, always held in early March, in 1989, a date change to October. 1990, there was a brief interlude with a double title sponsor Yonex / Intersport. 1991 Yonex was the sole title sponsor again and it increased the prize money to $ 60,000. In 1995 they found themselves with $ 100,000 for the first time in the six-figure sponsorship area. 1996, the total rose to 125,000 U.S. dollars. 1999 there was a massive cut to $ 50,000, before the prize money in 2005, increased again to $ 80,000. That was enough to lift the tournament on the status of a 2- star Grand Prix tournament on the status of a 3-star tournament. According to current categorization it is a BWF Grand Prix tournament from Level 3A. Since 2005, the event date is March again. Has not held the tournament in 1970, 1979 and 1998.

Following the event, 2008 it was announced that the tournament will be held until 2012 in Mülheim an der Ruhr. In October 2010 it was announced by the organization that the total prize money of U.S. $ 80,000 to $ 120,000 was raised and the tournament thus awarded the rank of Grand Prix Gold tournament from the 2011 edition.

As the organizer reported Prix Gold tournament in Mülheim an der Ruhr find the German Open until at least 2017 as Grand instead.
