U 146 was a German U- boat of the type II D, which was used in World War II by the German Navy.

History

The contract for the boat was awarded on 25 September 1939 the German shipyard works, Kiel. The keel was laid on 30 March 1940 the launching on 21 September 1940. Went into service under Captain Lieutenant Eberhard Hoffmann finally took place on 30 October 1940.

The boat belonged after its commissioning on 30 October 1940 to 31 December 1940 as the training boat for the first U- Flotilla in Kiel. From January 1, 1941 to June 21, 1941 school boat in the 22 U- Flotilla in Gdynia, it came from 22 June 1941 to 31 August 1941 as a front boat to the 3rd U- Flotilla in Kiel and La Rochelle. After active service came U 146, from 1 September 1941 to May 1945, again as a school boat for 22 U- Flotilla to Gotenhafen and Wilhelmshaven.

U 145 took during his service two patrols on which it could sink a ship with 3,496 GRT.

First patrol

The boat was launched on June 17, 1941 at 4:30 clock from Kiel, and expired on July 10, 1941 at 12.00 clock in a mountain area. On this lasting 24 days and 3,654 nautical miles across and 201 nm under water long company in the North Atlantic Ocean, northwest of the Hebrides was a ship with 3,496 GRT sunk.

June 28, 1941: sinking the Finnish steamer Pluto ( Lage59.65 - 8.333333 ) with 3,496 GRT. The steamer was sunk by a torpedo. He had 4,000 tons of cereals, 1,114 tons of coal and 237 tonnes of oil loaded and was on the way from Buenos Aires via New York City and Kirkwall to Petsamo. There were 12 dead and 18 survivors.

The boat ran on July 11, 1941 by Bergen Kristiansand to Kiel, where it moored on 14 July 1941.

Second patrol

The boat was launched on July 26, 1941 at 4.45 clock from Kiel, and ran at Elsinore on July 26, 1941. It was launched on August 9, 1941 at 11.30 clock back there, and she was launched on August 11, 1941 at 1:50 clock in Kiel. On the 17 -day operation in the Baltic Sea no ships were sunk or damaged.

Whereabouts

The boat was sunk on 5 May 1945 in Wilhelmshaven in the west chamber of the IV entry ( wheels lock ) as part of Operation Rainbow itself.
