Construction and commissioning
U 309 was put into service on January 27, 1943.
Use
With this boat, the war correspondent and later writers Lothar -Günther Buchheim escaped in August 1944 from the besieged Brest.
Downfall
U 309 was east of the Moray Firth by depth charges the Canadian frigate HMCS St. John sunk on February 16, 1945 ( Lage58.15 - 2.383333 ). None of the crew members was more alive leave the boat, which was led at that time by Lieutenant Herbert Löder.
