History

Construction and commissioning

The construction contract was made on October 20, 1939 at the German shipyard in Hamburg. The keel was laid on November 1, 1940, the launching on 19 August 1941 and the putting on 4 November 1941.

Time as a training boat

The boat was used after its entry into service until November 4, 1942 in the 4th U- Flotilla for training purposes. From November 4, 1942 until his sinking it served in the 10th U- Flotilla as a front boat. Over the entire period of training and first patrol was FKpt. Karl -Heinz Wolff commander of the boat. First patrol

U 509 left Kiel on 25 June 1942 and ran on 12 September in Lorient after 80 days at sea a. The first enemy boat ride was uneventful.

Second patrol

Third patrol

U 509 left Lorient on 23 December 1942 and ran on May 11, 1943 he returned there after 140 days at sea a. In this enterprise a ship with 4,937 GRT was sunk and damaged a ship with 7,129 GRT.

Fourth patrol

Whereabouts

On 15 July 1943, the Portuguese island of Madeira was U -509 north of a torpedo dropped from a Grumman TBF Avenger, sunk ( Lage34.033333 - 26.016667 ). The entire 54 -strong cast of the boat was killed.
