The German University of Technology in Oman ( GUtech; Arab الجامعة الألمانية للتكنولوجيا في عمان, DMG al - Ǧāmi ʿ at al - ʿ fī almānīya lil- tiknūlūǧiyā Umān ) is associated with the RWTH Aachen private university in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman.

It was founded jointly with the RWTH Aachen in 2007. The GUtech is the only German university on the Arabian Peninsula and the first private university in Oman, whose undergraduate programs are internationally accredited.

Development of the project

Through contacts and personal commitment of Michael Jansen, a professor of history of urban development at RWTH Aachen University to initial project ideas to establish a private university in Muscat concretized. This was followed by first fixing the RWTH with the Omani investors who were from the late summer of 2006 with the drafting of the operational aspects of a Liaison Office, affiliated WZL RWTH, and specifies a hired consultant to Omani side.

A small team led by Prof. Dr. Christoph Hilgers and Dr. Barbara Stäuble took care of from 2007 to approve the curricula, funding, new staff, as well as branding and marketing. The originally planned name " RWTH Oman ", which a number of other locations, including " RWTH Lingang " should follow in China, was dropped at the request of the North Rhine-Westphalian Minister of Science.

History

On 27 December 2006, a collaborative agreement between Oman Educational Services LLC ( OES) and the RWTH Aachen was signed, which sealed the founding of the German University of Technology in Oman ( GUtech ). The GUtech was ad intitio, so called without existing structures, with support from the RWTH Aachen in life.

In May 2007, the so-called " Beach campus," consisting of two villas in Al Athaiba ( Muscat), opened, and in October 2007 the first group of 60 students graduated in the so-called "Pre- University Study Program " at the GUtech recorded. In the same year four Bachelor of Science degree programs (Applied Geosciences, Applied Information Technology, Sustainable Tourism & Regional Development, and Urban Planning & Architectural Design ) from the Omani Ministry of Higher Education were approved. The first intake of students in these four full-time bachelor programs took place a year later, in October 2008. Again a year later, in June 2009, all of these bachelor accredited programs by the Accreditation Agency ACQUIN ( Accreditation, Certification and Quality Assurance Institute).

In 2010, two new Bachelor of Engineering introduced study programs (Mechanical Engineering and Process Engineering ), and - due to rising enrollments - a new university building, the so-called "Airport Campus" opened. Another Bachelor of Engineering ( Environmental Engineering ), a Master of Science in Petroleum Geoscience in 2011 was introduced in 2012.

In September 2012, the GUtech has moved to the new campus in Halban.

Acting Rector of GUtech was until August 31, 2008 Michael Jansen. Founding Rector of GUtech until March 31, 2013 Burkhard Rauhut, who had previously been Rector of RWTH Aachen. Since 1 April 2013 Michael Modigell is Rector of GUtech.

Affiliation with the RWTH Aachen

All private higher education institutions in Oman must have an academic affiliation with a prestigious, international university or college. The GUtech is affiliated to the largest university for technical studies in Germany, RWTH Aachen.

This affiliation is reflected in various situations of everyday life University. Thus, for example, all subjects of GUtech by professors of RWTH Aachen co-developed and cared for. Organizational structure

The GUtech is privately owned Omani owner ( Oman Educational Services LLC), which are represented on the Board of Directors ( BoD ). The Supervisory Board of GUtech is the Board of Governors ( BoG ). In January 2014 a total of 150 academic and administrative staff were employed at the GUtech. The majority of academic staff, about 70 percent comes from European universities.

Study programs

In addition to the GUtech " Foundation Program ", the university offers seven undergraduate programs as well as a master's program.

The " Foundation Program " consisting of the " Core Studies Program " and the " Academic Studies Program " was launched to equip students with the necessary skills for a successful undergraduate study. The " Core Studies Program ", focusing largely on the teaching of English, the " Academic Studies Program " on the mediation of various scientific and business content.

The language of instruction at GUtech is English. German is taught as an additional language.

International accreditation

The GUtech is the first private university in the Sultanate of Oman, the Bachelor of Science degree programs are internationally accredited. This accreditation ACQUIN ( Accreditation, Certification and Quality Assurance Institute) was conducted in June 2009.

GUtech Campus

In September 2012, the GUtech has moved to its new campus in Halban. The main building of the University has a number of class rooms and seminar facilities, a large amphitheater for meetings, various laboratories, a library, sports halls, administrative premises and a cafeteria and a mini market. Right next to the main building there are student accommodation.

In the next three phases more classrooms, student houses, a museum, a mosque as well as facilities for leisure and sports activities are planned.
