Germanus of Granfelden

Germanus of Gran Rheinfelden (* around 612 in Trier, † 675 in Moutier, Canton of Bern, Switzerland ) was the first abbot of the monastery of Moutier- Grandval; he is a Christian saint.

Germanus came from an influential family of Senator Trier. He became a monk and first moved to the monastery Remiremont at Metz, later moving to the monastery of Luxeuil. As in 640, the monastery of Moutier - Grandval was founded, abbot of Luxeuil forest Ebert gave him the line of this monastery. During about 35 years Germanus was there head.

According to legend Duke Eticho wanted the area subject to Delémont in 675. Germanus acted as mediator and met with his companion Randoald at Courtetelle (southwest of Delémont ) on it. After arguments Germanus and Randoald were killed on the way back by supporters of the Duke.

His feast day is 21 February. His Abtsstab has remained preserved and one of the oldest surviving crooks. It is kept in the Jurassic Museum d' art et d' histoire in Delémont.
