Germany women's national basketball team

The German national basketball team of the ladies represented Germany since 1954 in women's basketball.

Greatest success is winning the bronze medal at the European Basketball Championship in 1997.

History

The first games of the German women's selection took place at the European Championship 1954 in Belgrade. Germany was defeated in most games significantly ( 11-106, inter alia, against the USSR), was his first victory until booked in the match against Denmark ( 33:21 ) and finished at the end of the 9th and last place in the field. Two years later, the German ladies came in 15th and last place again at the European Championships.

The following European Championships were held without German participation. After missed qualifying for the European Championships in 1962 and 1964, the women's team took part in the European Championships in Budapest in 1966. However, where they finished 12th and last place, while the women's selection of the GDR was able to win the bronze medal. Two years later at the European Championships in 1968, the German women occupied only the last place.

The next European Championships was in Cagliari, where Germany was 10th out of 13 participants in 1974. In 1976 it reached again only for the 13th and last place in 1978 for the penultimate. After missed qualifying for the European Championship in 1980, took the German selection for the EM- annual changes of rhythm in 1981 at the European Championships and was part of the last 10 European Championships before German reunification in 1983, and Germany was the last for the umpteenth time.

After 12 years of forced break due to missed qualifications took the ladies selection 1995 at the European Championships in Brno part and finished at the end of the 9th and last place in the field.

Even more surprising was the performance of the German team in 1997 in the Ladies European Championship in Hungary. You had to get in the semifinals after a gauzy 77:78 defeat after extra Lithuania defeated. The 3rd place match decided the German team with 86:61 against the hosts from Hungary for himself and won the bronze medal. The German Marlies Askamp was voted MVP of the tournament.

But success should not be repeated. In the first and to date only participation in the World Cup in 1998 in his own country the ladies selection took only 11th place at 16 participating nations. At the European Championships in 1999 in Poland, the women managed only the 12th and last place.

After two missed qualifications in 2001 and 2003, the German national basketball team of the ladies took part in the 2005 European Championships in Turkey. There, however, they finished only 11th and penultimate rank. At the European Championships in Italy in 2007 it survived after victories against Romania and defeats against Belgium and Lithuania the first round. After that you started with an unexpected victory against defending champion Czech Republic. The team had to travel home from 16 teams but after defeats against Turkey and Latvia than 11.

In 2008, the German women's national basketball team missed direct qualification for the European Championship and had the additional qualifying round, the contest the three best of the failure in the automatic qualifying teams. Here they had in January 2009, the national teams of Bulgaria and the Ukraine as competitors for the last place on the European Championship 2009. The first game in Kiev lost the German team against the Ukraine with 47:73 quite clearly. In the second game succeeded in Ischerlandhalle in Hagen against Bulgaria 68:60 a success. Since Ukraine was able to win both games against the Bulgarians, the German team had to win against the Ukraine, in order to have a chance to participate in the 2009 European Championships at play in Saarlouis with a basket difference of at least 26 points. But this did not happen and so the German team failed to qualify for the European Championships despite a 48:45 victory. In the last game Germany lost in Bulgaria with 66:67 and finished in the additional qualifying round of the European Championship behind the Ukraine and Bulgaria before a worthless second place.

Also qualifying for the 2011 European Championships proved to be a difficult task. In a group with England, Ukraine and Slovakia we missed the direct European Championship qualifier and had to detour via the extra 2011 round go in the push through the German team and thus was able to secure the European Championships.
