Culture and sights

St. Georg

At St. George's Church earlier pilgrimage believers at fixed Georgi (April 23 ) from near and far. The walk up the mountain is lined with old linden and five baroque brick way stations from the years around 1700.

The geostete Tuffquaderbau comes from the Romanesque to 1180th The saddle roof tower in brick masonry was built in the 15th century. The building was extensively renovated in 1966-1970 and largely returned to the original Romanesque style; it also baroque additions canceled. Inside a Romanesque apse fresco fragments and later decorative paintings ( New Testament scenes, and larger than life legend of St. George St. Christopher ) could be exposed. In the apse, Christ is represented as Pantocrator in a mandorla, surrounded by the symbols of the four evangelists enthroned above the heavenly Jerusalem. Is accompanied Christ on both sides of each an angel and a saint. Below the mandorla are to Mt 25, 1-13 represented as half-figures the 5 wise and 5 foolish virgins. Below the virgins twelve men are depicted, an interpretation as the twelve apostles is therefore close. However, unusual is the absence of the usual attributes of the apostles, such as keys or St. Andrew's Cross. Uniformly holds each of the sitter a book in their hands. With otherwise good condition unfortunately the lower areas are not preserved. The importance of Apsisausmalung of St. George is based on their quality with extensive use of the precious lapis lazuli blue and their uniqueness in Bavarian Swabia.

On the south side of the nave copy of the Romanesque crucifix, the original (now in the Bavarian National Museum ) was originally placed in the middle of the choir arch.

From a renewal at the end of the 17th century, the Baroque coffered ceiling in the nave have (dated 1690) and statues and paintings preserved.

St. Wendelin

St. Wendelin in Obergermaringen is mentioned as a pilgrimage church of St. Wendelin in writing in the 16th century. In place of the original chapel in 1697 started the construction of a baroque church. The blueprint is probably derived from the Wessobrunner builder and plasterer Johann Schmuzer. 1727 the building was completed with two domed towers.

Inside the church a wealth of wall and ceiling paintings and rich stucco work by Wessobrunner masters are preserved. On the walls are numerous frescoes with scenes from the life and legend of St. Wendelin. The vaults fields adorn paintings with scenes from the Old and New Testaments, framed by lush stucco ornaments.

Is preserved in the church a relic of St. Wendelin, set in a magnificent Relic Monstrance. Even today, pilgrims come to pilgrimages. The traditional Wendelin ride was re- launched and is held every three years. The first major detectable rode round with horses and harnessing took place for 1300.
