Gerontology

Gerontology ( gr γέρων Géron " old man ", λόγος lógos " teaching "), even -aged or aged Swiss shaft called, is the science of aging people.

Definition

The Gerontology examined being old and getting older and is therefore also known as old-age and Swiss shaft. It explores the associated phenomena, problems and resources interdisciplinary and is in close contact with various natural, human, social sciences and humanities: " Gerontology deals with the description, explanation and modification of physical, psychological, social, historical and cultural aspects of aging and age, including the analysis of age- related and alternskonstituierenden environments and social environments. "Even the current problems of the elderly and social policy shape the research questions of gerontology.

In Austria Gerontology is part of the training in some of the nursing profession; in Germany in the elderly - training a three-hour compulsory subject.

Disciplines

To gerontology include in a broader sense: elderly ( support for older people through institutions ), age sociology or Gerontosoziologie ( research sociological aspects), biogerontology ( research on the biological causes), demography ( population growth ), geriatrics ( research, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of diseases in age), Geriatric Psychiatry ( the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders in old age ), Gerontopsychology ( research into the psychological aspects), Gerontopsychotherapie ( Emotional support in old age - see main article Psychotherapy ), senior management ( organization of everyday life of older people ), social gerontology (the study of social aspects) and practical theology ( theological interpretation of aging ).

Tasks of Gerontology

The gerontology reflects the change the image of aging in society. Target group here are the general public, seniors themselves, professionally dealt with seniors groups and politics. As a medium between universities and public serve seniors days and conferences. To gerontological research include the study of the biological basis of aging as well as the change in social systems. Social Sciences and demographics, neighboring sciences of gerontology. The aim of gerontology is linking different fields such as geriatrics, geriatric psychiatry, geriatric care and social work to an independent scientific discipline. It can be observed an increased attention to pragmatic issues. Even disciplines of economics serve as the question of the optimal structure of the pension system. Scientific knowledge economy will increase in the future due to the increasing management orientation of the area. The German federal government has so far released six old reports that the situation of the elderly study (1991 - 2010).
