Gerrit Zalm

Gerrit Zalm ( born May 6, 1952 in Enkhuizen ) is a Dutch politician of the liberal Volkspartij voor de Vrijheid Democracy (VVD ). He was, with short breaks in 1996 and 2002/ 03, 1994-2007 Minister of Finance of the Netherlands.

Work

Gerrit ended successfully in 1975 the study of economics in Amsterdam to start a career in Finance. Zalm was soon influential head of department and since 1990 also professor at the Free University of Amsterdam. 1994 Zalm was first appointed Minister of Finance. He remained so until the election of the first short Balkenende government, which he did not belong; instead he became group leader of the VVD in the Dutch House of Commons. But already the second Balkenende government (2003-2006) should belong Zalm again as finance minister, he also practiced at this time, the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister of the Netherlands from.
